Generally they are used in the back area of the arrow, where the nock is inserted, but in 3D shooting they are often seen mounted on the side of the tip as a reinforcement of the shaft.

For the choice of the nock collar, we advise you to check the external diameter of your shaft and choose the nock collar with the closest larger size to the OD of the shaft (from +0.01mm to max +0.15mm).
